In the book, Last stand of the Tin can Sailors, the author reports an incident where some of the survivors of taffy 3 went to the battle site to pay their respects to those who didn’t survive the battle. He said they wre running into rough seas, and one of the Coast Guard sailors told them that they (meaning the fallen) knew they’d come and were showing that they were excited that they were remembered.
